U.S. Army Pvt. Manuel Ortiz (left) Lancaster, Calif., and U.S. Army Pfc. Cody Crutchfield (right),of Magnolia, examine a model-improvised explosive device (IED) during the Counter IED Training Class Feb. 9 at Camp A in Phitsanulok province, Kingdom of Thailand, during exercise Cobra Gold 2013. The training will be used to teach the Royal Thai Army and the U.S. military effective techniques in identifying IED's. The soldiers are both members of 3rd platoon, Baker Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment.

Magnolia Rotary welcomes Students of the Month

The Magnolia Rotary Club welcomed the February Students of the Month to their weekly luncheon, Feb. 12. Magnolia High School Principal Jeff Springer introduced the four Magnolia High School students to the Magnolia Rotary Club. Pictured are (from left) Shelby Allen, Jonathan Beilowitz, Michael Kosir and Michaela Miller. The Magnolia Rotary Club meets every Tuesday, at noon, at the Celeste Graves Education Support Center.

Tomball Rotary honors Students of the Month

The Tomball Rotary Club honored the February Students of the Month, during their weekly luncheon Feb. 13. Pictured (from left) are Tomball High School seniors Kyle Handler and Madelyn Jensen. Jensen plans to start her college career at Lone Star with plans to major in both cinema and special education, while Handler will head to the University of Texas, where he plans to study engineering.

AAR Pet of the Week - Lenny

Lenny is a 3-year-old miniature pincher mix. He is a bright-eyed and intelligent boy. Lenny is always very excited to see the crew of volunteers who come in to exercise him and he quickly learned to walk on a leash and interact with everyone. He is eager to learn his commands, gets along well with other dogs and loves to be petted. He is light heart worm positive, but will be very healthy and active once his treatment is completed. Magnolia Mardi Gras on the Stroll a big success

More than 1,080 participants carried brightly-colored and decorated umbrellas during The Magnolia Mardi Gras on the Stroll event, Feb. 9. Magnolia's attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest umbrella parade came up short, however participants vowed to try again next year. This year's winning "Spirited Business" marchers were from Magnolia Glass, the Magnolia YMCA, MYLA, Nichols Sawmill Elementary and J.L. Lyon Elementary.

Therapy Pet Pals looking for new therapy dogs

The Woodlands/Houston chapter of Therapy Pet Pals of Texas is looking for volunteers with calm, friendly and obedient dogs to provide pet therapy to elderly and ill people at local healthcare facilities. The non-profit organization will be taking reservations until Feb. 20 for the Feb. 27 qualifying and training class. Yoho named Officer of the Month

The Officer of the Month for February was recognized at the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce First Friday networking luncheon, Feb. 1. Tomball Police Department (TPD) Detective Kenny Yoho was honored for outstanding service by TPD Chief Rob Hauck. Officer of the Month is sponsored by Woodforest National Bank. Magnolia High School's Ben Hudson (left) and Jacquline Mears(right) took part in a national discussion on gun control, moderated by Hari Sreenivasan of the PBS show Newshour. They are two of eight students selected nationally to take part in the discussion. The report is expected to air on PBS sometime next week.
