A man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the 1990 shooting deaths of two Florida men in northwest Harris County.
Donald Miles was found guilty of murder and sentenced to state prison for the murder of Robert Holley and William Migues, in a Harris County court last Thursday.
Detectives and prosecutors argued that on the evening of Sept. 12, 1990, Holley, 43, and Migues, 25, were robbed and murdered in the 4300 block of Spring Cypress Road.
"The two victims were lured to a storage facility and that's where (Miles) shot and killed them," said Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Christina Garza.
They were then taken and buried in a shallow grave in the 800 block of Century Plaza Drive. Their bodies weren't discovered until Feb. 27, 1991 by an individual searching through discarded auto parts in the vacant field.
"Miles then went back to the storage unit and set it on fire," Garza said.
The case went unsolved after the initial investigation.
In 2011, the HCSO's Cold Case Unit reopened the investigation and identified Donald Wayne Miles as the prime suspect in the case. They traveled to Louisiana to meet with Miles, who then confessed to detectives that he murdered the two men, while also telling police where he dumped the murder weapon.
"He told detectives where the gun was and miraculously they found it in a pond more than 20 years later.
He was charged with capital murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison.
So far the HCSO Cold Case Unit's conviction rate is 100%, since being resurrected in 2010.
