Magnolia receives Train Town designation, Feb. 12

Magnolia has been selected by Union Pacific Railroad as an official Train Town, celebrating 150 years of railway history. A presentation of this award will be made at the Magnolia depot at 4 p.m. Feb. 12 and the public is invited. Union Pacific officials will be on hand along with sponsors of the application including the Magnolia Historical Society and the Greater Magnolia Chamber of Commerce. The Magnolia Historical Society is holding their annual Garage Sale on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Community Building in Magnolia. This is a popular local event and many bargains can be found. All proceeds are used to maintain the historic Magnolia Depot and surrounding grounds and buildings. Tomball PD• Jan. 13 Officer Ramsey arrested a 50-year-old man from Tomball for Assault Family Violence. At 8:50 p.m., Ramsey responded to a disturbance in the 14100 block of Carnes Wood. Upon investigation, Ramsey discovered that the suspect had assaulted his girlfriend.• Jan. 14 Officer Tikal responded to a theft in the 2400 block of S. Mardi Gras is coming to Magnolia in a big way and everyone is invited to participate. Feb. 9 the Magnolia Community Foundation will host Mardi Gras on the Stroll in downtown Magnolia beginning at 4 p.m. – but the really big event of this celebration starts at 3 p.m. with free registration for the Dancing Umbrella Parade – Magnolia's first approved Guinness Book of World Records competition. With fanfare at its five colleges five years ago this month, Lone Star College System (LSCS) became the new name for the North Harris Montgomery Community College District, which also had its beginning 40 years ago, in 1973.The college, founded as North Harris County College, opened its doors for classes in the fall of 1973 with 613 students. HOUSTON (AP) — Prosecutors on Monday dropped charges against a 22-year-old man who authorities initially believed was involved in a shooting that wounded him and two others at a Houston-area community college. Carlton Berry was arrested soon after the Jan. 22 shootings at Lone Star College and charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. But authorities later accused another man, Trey Foster, 22, of being the shooter.
