Our current political leaders tell us that our immigration system is "broken" and must be "reformed". We hear it from both Democrats and Republicans, so it must be correct, right?
Wrong! What is broken is much of our federal government itself.
How is it that our immigration system worked fine for 145-plus years and then, suddenly, it no longer works?
I write this as a second generation American. I understand that we are a nation of immigrants, of which millions arrived through various points of entry throughout the country for more than a century. They started small businesses, raised families won wars and, most importantly, they became Americans.
So what changed? What is different about this new wave of immigrants? Well, two things come to mind.
First of all, we must ask the question, who are these people? Are they ex-convicts? Are they pedophiles? Do they have contagious tuberculosis, drug resistant infections or other diseases? Could they be drug addicts or drug dealers or, are they possibly radical terrorists? Who knows?
Let's not stereotype illegal immigrants as, simply Hispanic only. Many of the people here illegally are from the Middle East, Pakistan, Russia and the former Soviet Union bloc. The problem is that we absolutely do not know who or what these people are. The safeguards and protective controls put in place more than a century ago at places such as Ellis Island, no longer seem to apply or even matter. Come one come all, including violent criminals and gang members.
There are caseloads of American citizens of all races, ages and backgrounds being murdered, robbed and raped by illegal aliens. Thousands of them have multiple drunk driving convictions, so someone please inform MADD, for they have been curiously quiet on that issue.
Many of our nation's law enforcement officers have been killed by illegal aliens and many of those same illegals had been deported multiple times, only to continuously return. It's akin to replacing your carpeting without fixing the gaping hole in your roof.
A second issue is that our federal politicians tell us these people are here simply to do the jobs Americans refuse to do. Really? Americans are refusing jobs? Then again, why would entry level Americans choose work when they can access multiple levels of welfare programs? From food stamps to free phones, to welfare cash, free housing, Medicaid, etc. Our federal and state governments seem to have rewarded and paid our working class to stay home .The sad part is that the only way our welfare class can ever lose those government handouts, is if they ever dare to follow their dreams and improve themselves. Are we trapping these people in a never ending spiral of government dependency?
After Lyndon Johnson enacted his great welfare society legislation in the mid 1960's, our working class decided they could make just as much or more money at home than at any menial job. Can you blame them? And let's face it, not all of them are just sitting at home – they are, shall we say, finding creative ways to supplement their benefits. Idle hands, devil's workshop, so to speak.
Not to mention, the fraud in these programs is staggering. The federal government essentially paid our working class to stay home, hence a labor vacuum was created and subsequently filled by illegal immigrants. The explosion of illegal immigration is undeniably linked and in direct correlation to the rise of our great stay at home welfare society. One created the other.
Recent studies show that the majority of illegal immigrants are now receiving some level of government welfare. Our own federal government was caught red handed this past year actually advertising these benefit packages not only in Spanish, but in Mexico. Yes, in Mexico, on Mexican television. Those ads have since stopped airing.
Can you imagine sitting in your living room and viewing a Canadian taxpayer funded advertisement giving you the 1-800 number to call for Canadian welfare benefits once you've arrived in Canada illegally? Ain't gonna happen!
Furthermore, our bankrupt federal government is promising these freebies to illegal immigrants with money borrowed on a Chinese credit card – the bill being handed to our grandchildren.
In 2007, then Sen. Obama correctly claimed that burdening our future generations with unsustainable debt was "un-patriotic" and I believe most Americans would agree with him. We are currently borrowing over $3 billion a day just to meet government payrolls. When do we ask ourselves, how large of a government can we afford? What type of debt riddled nation are we leaving our future generations? Why are we spending our grandkids money guarding South Korea, but not our southern border? Is it time for the border governors to call in the National Guard? Why is our military still in Germany and Japan and a hundred other nations, but not guarding America at home? I understand if those nations security is in our best interest, but hey, can we please make them write the check?
Our federal government is regrettably erasing the amazing immigrant work ethic by purposefully getting them hooked on handouts, thus creating generations of new immigrants who will know nothing other than looking to the government for basic survival. Nobody is educating them about our amazing capitalist system that is, or maybe was, America, or the dream of hard work and financial success and freedom. Nobody is stressing the learning of our history or even our language; not to mention respect for our sovereign borders. It's simply un-American. If nothing else, our founders stressed and envisioned hard work and individual responsibility, along with the freedom to succeed or fail. Our pursuit of happiness was their dream.
Let's at least call it what it really is – illegal colonization of our nation, not immigration. So, arrive legally, learn our language, respect our borders and work hard to fulfill your American dream! Remember, welfare is not the dream, it's the nightmare !
