HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak says rookie kicker Randy Bullock is out for the season after tearing a muscle near his groin. Bullock, a fifth-round draft pick out of Texas A&M, was competing with veteran Shayne Graham. Bullock was 3 for 4 on field goals and Graham has gone 5 for 5 in the preseason. Kubiak said Sunday that Bullock's groin "had been bothering him" in recent weeks and he had played through it. Bullock was "black and blue" and could barely lift his right leg, Kubiak said, when he came into Reliant Stadium for treatment following…

Errors doom Rangers in loss to Twins

Written by Monday, 27 August 2012 16:32
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Even Josh Hamilton couldn't make up for the Texas Rangers' sloppy play on Sunday. Hamilton hit his 35th homer and drove in four runs, but the Rangers made a couple of costly fielding blunders in a 6-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins. "The frustrating thing was that we didn't play as sharply today," Texas outfielder David Murphy said. "If we did, it would have been a different outcome." Ben Revere had four hits as Minnesota stopped a five-game slide. Cole De Vries pitched five effective innings to win for the first time in nearly two months.…

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys have released receiver Raymond Radway and seven other players. The team also Monday waived two injured players, receiver Donovon Kemp and linebacker Caleb McSurdy, and declared center-guard Kevin Kowalski physically unable to perform because of an ankle injury. With the 11 moves, the Cowboys still were at 76 players on their roster. They had to make one more cut before the NFL mandated 75-man roster deadline later Monday. The other released players were tackles Levy Adcock and Tyrone Novikoff, receiver David Little, tight end Harry Flaherty, running back Javarris Williams, cornerback C.J. Wilson…

Brenham High School player suffers stroke

Written by Friday, 24 August 2012 16:43
BRENHAM, Texas (AP) — A Central Texas high school football player is hospitalized in intensive care after suffering a stroke. Senior Brenham defensive back and receiver Justin Davis is recovering from surgeries to ease pressure from brain swelling. Brenham athletic director and football coach Glen West said Davis is in critical condition at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan. West said Davis had reported feeling ill about a half-hour after practice Wednesday. After basic tests for a concussion proved negative, Davis said he felt better and went into a team meeting. His condition quickly worsened, however, and he was taken to…

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys are finally home, and out of training camp mode. Even with two preseason games left in five days at Cowboys Stadium, where the team had a two-hour workout without pads Thursday, coach Jason Garrett said the team is making the transition to the regular season. "We're a different team now than we were 3½ weeks ago when we started out there in Oxnard (Calif.)," Garrett said. "The training camp is behind us now. ... (Players) have to kind of shift gears, get back in the mode of being back in Dallas and get…

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ron Washington was in a grateful mood after his 500th win as manager of the Texas Rangers. Josh Hamilton had five RBIs and Mitch Moreland doubled in the go-ahead run during a six-run eighth inning that carried Texas to a 10-6 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night. "I think you have to give a lot of credit to the organization, the players, the coaches and everyone," said Washington, in his sixth season as a manager — all with the Rangers. "We got there fast. I didn't get there alone. "I just hope I can…

ST. LOUIS (AP) — David Freese's three-run homer snapped the Cardinals' seven-game longball drought and St. Louis beat the Houston Astros 13-5 Thursday to complete a three-game sweep. Freese and Matt Holliday each had four RBIs and Allen Craig had three hits and three RBIs. The Cardinals shrugged aside a 4-0, fourth-inning deficit and sent Houston to its seventh straight loss. The Astros are 0-4 while getting outscored 32-8 since interim manager Tony DeFrancesco replaced Brad Mills as leader of the stripped-down roster. Houston has won just seven of its last 50 overall. Ben Francisco had three hits for the…

HOUSTON (AP) — The city of Houston wants to become a part of college football's playoff system. Houston submitted a bid on Tuesday to host the new Big 12-Southeastern Conference bowl and join the rotation for semifinal games in the sport's new postseason format, which begins in the 2014 season. The champions of the Big 12 and Southeastern Conference or replacement teams from those leagues would meet in the bowl game, at least temporarily dubbed the Champions Bowl. The game would be played at Reliant Stadium, home of the NFL's Houston Texans. Cotton Bowl organizers have also expressed interest in…

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A large contingent of family and friends waited outside the visitor's clubhouse for Lucas Harrell. After getting knocked around, the Houston Astros rookie pitcher wasn't all that anxious to see everyone. Harrell allowed hits to six of the first seven batters in a four-run first inning that was plenty of cushion for Adam Wainwright, who threw a five-hitter and matched his career high with 12 strikeouts in the St. Louis Cardinals' 7-0 victory on Tuesday night. "I feel like I let a lot of people down," Harrell said after giving up six runs in five innings.…
