Texas A&M goes with Manziel at QB

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Texas A&M is entering a new conference with a new coach. And Wednesday night, the Aggies decided on a new quarterback, too. Former Houston coach Kevin Sumlin said Johnny Manziel will start Texas A&M's opener against Louisiana Tech on Aug. 30 as the Aggies prepare for their first season in the Southeastern Conference. He'll replace Ryan Tannehill, the eighth overall pick in the NFL draft. Cowboys' TE Witten out with spleen injury

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Jason Witten is going to have to get used to not doing much of anything if he wants to play in the season opener next month. Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday that his Pro Bowl tight end sustained a "slightly lacerated" spleen in the preseason opener Monday night against Oakland. DALLAS (AP) — Five straight state championships weren't quite enough to vault Lake Travis High School to the top of the preseason poll in its Class 5A debut. Lake Travis is second to defending 5A Division I champion Southlake Carroll in The Associated Press preseason Texas high school football poll released Thursday. Seattle's Felix Hernandez threw Major League Baseball's third perfect game of the season Wednesday — a record — joining San Francisco's Matt Cain and the White Sox's Philip Humber, who also tossed his gem at Safeco Field. That means six of the 23 perfectos in baseball history have come since 2009. Little wonder this is being called the Decade of the Pitcher. Still not impressed? It gets better. Astros' Norris departs after taking liner off foot

CHICAGO (AP) — Houston Astros right-hander Bud Norris left Wednesday's game against the Chicago Cubs after being hit in the foot by a line drive in the fourth inning.
