A year ago, the Magnolia 4B Economic Development Corporation assumed the debt service for moving the utility lines along FM 1774 between Friendship Drive and 10th Street. This act removed the debt from the City of Magnolia, which would have been forced to raise property taxes in order to pay it. The debt was a result of a $2 million loan from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Special Infrastructure Fund used by the city to move the utility lines, which was necessary due to the widening of FM 1774 within the city limits. Just last week, the 4B Corporation…

249 expansion project moving closer to reality

Written by Monday, 17 September 2012 18:16
TOMBALL - A straight shot to the Beltway from Tomball is inching closer to reality, as the Harris County Commissioners Court approved contracts with several engineering firms. The expansion of SH 249 into a six-lane toll way, was approved by the court earlier this year and will run from the Tomball bypass to where the current freeway ends just north of Spring-Cypress Road. The commissioners are looking at breaking ground about a year from now. “I’m very excited,” Harris County Pct. 4 Commissioner Jack Cagle said. “This road is a road that a lot of people have had a desire…

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — A mob armed with guns and grenades launched a fiery attack on the U.S. Consulate, killing the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans. President Barack Obama strongly condemned the violence, vowed Wednesday to bring the killers to justice and tightened security at diplomatic posts around the world. The attack that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens — the first U.S. ambassador to die in the line of duty since 1979 — came on Tuesday's 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist strike and presented a new foreign policy crisis for the United States in a region…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration, roiled by the first killing of a U.S. ambassador in more than 30 years, is investigating whether the assault on the U.S. consulate in Libya was a planned terrorist strike to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and not a spontaneous mob enraged over an anti-Islam YouTube video President Barack Obama vowed in a Rose Garden address that the U.S. would "work with the Libyan government to bring to justice" those who killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. Intelligence officials said the attack on the Benghazi consulate was "too…

CAIRO (AP) — Main ultraconservative Islamist protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Egypt's capital Tuesday and brought down the flag, replacing it with a black flag with an Islamic inscription to protest a video attacking Islam's prophet, Muhammad. Hundreds of protesters marched to the embassy in downtown Cairo, gathering outside its walls and chanting against the movie, which was reportedly produced in the United States. "Say it, don't fear: Their ambassador must leave," the crowd chanted. Dozens of protesters then scaled the embassy walls, went into the courtyard and took down the flag from a pole. They…

Detectives need help from the public in locating and arresting two people that are wanted for the exploitation of a disabled individual. In mid-August 2012, deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office met with a disabled male victim in the Montgomery area who had hired two people as caretakers. After terminating their employment the victim discovered that the suspects had stolen items from his home, some of which were sentimental to the victim that had belonged to his late wife. After completing an investigation investigators have charged two suspects with exploitation of a disabled individual, however the two suspects have…

NEW YORK (AP) — Americans marked the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks Tuesday in familiar but subdued ceremonies that put grieving families ahead of politicians and suggested it's time to move on after a decade of remembrance. As in past years, thousands gathered at the World Trade Center site in New York, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa., to read the names of nearly 3,000 victims killed in the worst terror attack in U.S. history. But many felt that last year's 10th anniversary was an emotional turning point for public mourning of the attacks. For the first…

Nearly 20,000 acres scorched. Almost 80 homes destroyed. Firefighters battling heat, wind and flames for nearly two weeks. These are some of the heartwrenching memories from the Tri-County wildfire that ravaged the area near Magnolia just a year ago. But for every bad memory it seems as if there were many more heartwarming stories. Like the horse that was saved after suffering burns to nearly 40 percent of its body. Houses still standing, even though the earth was scorched all around it. Firefighters from as far away as Alaska showing up to help. “It was amazing to see what the…

It’s been a year since the City of Magnolia passed an ordinance against texting while driving within the city limits. According to Sgt. Silliman of the Magnolia Police Department, this ordinance is doing its job while making the city’s streets safer. “There has been a 54 percent decrease in the number of auto crashes since the ordinance was passed last September,” said Silliman. Silliman contends that thhis is a pretty important statistic because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (www.nhtsa.gov) sited the death of more than 3,000 people nationwide because of texting and driving, or one in ten traffic fatalities,…

World reknown artist Larry Dyke coming to Tomball

Written by Monday, 10 September 2012 17:09
Larry Dyke’s official biography states that he has devoted his life’s work to the interpretation of the beaty he sees in nature. That beauty will be on display in Tomball Sept. 15, as Dyke will appear at Sallie Fisher’s Custom Frame and Art Gallery from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. “He is known for his Texas landscapes, golfing series and he does a lot of inspirational pieces,” Fisher said. “He’s one of the most famous artists of our time and his work is extremely sought after.” Dyke, who has a painting still residing at The Vatican, said his personal journey…
