Tomball Boy Scout earns rare scouting honor

For 11 years Tomball High School (THS) senior William Milby has been earning his merit badges as a member of Boy Scout Troop 471. He rose through the ranks and completed a complicated project to become an Eagle Scout. A lifetime of dedication has enabled Milby to complete a rare feat in the scouting world -- being awarded all 133 merit badges offered by the scouts. “It’s feels great to accomplish this,” Milby said. Merit badges were something added by the Boy Scouts of America in 1910, to encourage scouts to learn areas of interest and teach them valuable skills.…

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Hurricane Isaac began a slow, drenching slog inland from the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, pushing water over a rural Louisiana levee and stranding some people in homes and cars as the storm spun into a newly fortified New Orleans exactly seven years after Katrina. Tomball ISD one of few to meet tough federal standards

While many schools and several state education agencies are grumbling about what they say are unfair and unrealistic standards in federal education laws, the Tomball school system has found a way for most of its campuses to meet them. The standards, called adequate yearly progress (AYP), were created by the No Child Left Behind Act. All public schools are evaluated annually in reading and math and meet the requirements if 87 percent of the students on a given campus pass the state reading and English test and 83 percent pass the math test. Magnolia man charged in drunken stabbing

Montgomery County deputies have charged a Magnolia man after a drunken fight led to a stabbing at his home. Police say that Benjamin Beasley, 31, stabbed Christopher C. Holliday during an early morning disturbance at Beasley’s home Aug. 17. Deputies responded to Beasley’s home on Dobbin-Hufsmith Road around 4:30 that morning. When they arrived they found Holliday lying in the doorway and covered in blood. In an odd twist deputies say that Beasley was tending to the victim when they arrived. Carnley was hired recently as the group’s new president, bringing with her several years of publishing and marketing experience. A recent weekend offered two community events just hours apart for Magnolia residents to enjoy. The second annual Tailgate Party, held on The Stroll Aug. 18, had a large turnout – that is, until a major thunderstorm drowned out the festivities a bit early. Football teams, marching bands, cheerleaders and flag drill teams from both Magnolia high schools provided a celebratory spirit to get everyone in the mood for cheering. NEW YORK (AP) — A laid-off women's accessories designer shot a former coworker to death in front of the Empire State Building, causing a chaotic showdown with police Friday in front of one of the world's best-known landmarks. Police killed the suspect and at least nine others were wounded, some possibly by police gunfire, city officials said. Harris County to combat West Nile outbreak with aerial spray

Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services (HCPHES) Mosquito Control has scheduled an aerial spray operation for portions of west and northwest Harris County to combat a recent West Nile outbreak in the area. The aerial application will occur Wednesday evening, Aug. 22. The plan is to spray approximately 63,000 acres by air, weather permitting. Vector Disease Control will conduct the operation, using the insecticide dibrom. Harris County officials say that dibrom is routinely used to fight mosquito infestations and is considered safe. However health officials do advise that residents remain indoors during the operation, to guard against any adversse…
