Grand Parkway project moving forward

TxDOT recently announced that it has selected a design-builder for sections of the Grand Parkway that will run south of Tomball and into Montgomery County. Zachry-Odebrecht Parkway Builders, J.V., was selected to develop, design, construct and maintain sections F-1, F-2 and G. The sections will complete about 38 miles of the toll road project, from US 290 to US 59 North. The project is expected to cost just more than $1 billion. Construction will begin in 2013 and TxDOT is hopeful work can be completed in 2015. After the project is completed the developer will handle capital maintenance responsibilities for…

Goblins and witches, pixies and superheroes enjoyed playing games, sampling treats and visiting with all types of animals on October 27 at the W.G. Jones State Forest on FM 1488 near Magnolia and The Woodlands. The site was the scene of the Friends of Texas Wildlife (FTWL) "Owl-O-Ween" fundraiser, which had more than 2,000 visitors. Not only did visitors come in costume, but several of the volunteers dressed as their favorite forest creature in honor of the occasion. TOMAGWA expansion plans rapidly come to fruition

A long awaited dental clinic at TOMAGWA is now a reality, thanks to a partnership with the Tomball Regional Health Foundation (THRF). THRF is the new name of the Tomball Hospital Authority, which ran Tomball Regional Medical Center until its sale in 2011. "Tomball Regional Health Foundation's vision is to become a catalyst for measurable health and wellness improvements in Tomball and the surrounding communities," TRHF Chairman Jack Smith said. The City of Tomball recently added land to its extraterritorial jurisdiction, which is currently being purchased by Baker Hughes, on the northeast corner of FM 2978 and FM 2920. The land, once developed, will include a new 72,445 square-foot classroom building, a 36,000 square-foot workshop, a 16,730 square-foot lab and two training oil rigs. The $50-plus million project will be Baker Hughes Western Hemisphere Education Center once complete. The company has a similar site in the eastern hemisphere located in Dubai, India. Six years ago Magnolia residents Valerie Cranford and her sister Kathleen Hammers, started a small equestrian drill team because they loved to ride and wanted others to have the chance to enjoy their horses. Dubbed the Lone Star Cowgirls, the team originally consisted of four members. Cranford choreographed routines for the riders and their mounts, while Hammers designed and sewed their western-style outfits. Today, the Lone Star Cowgirls number 12 members and their flashy paint horses are well-known to local rodeo fans. Bomb threat received at Tomball college

A bomb threat was phoned in early this afternoon, officials at Lone Star College-Tomball confirmed. Officials said they received the anonymous threat by phone at around 1:30 p.m. Tomball Police, the Harris County Sheriff's office, federal authorities and campus police were all on scene. Students began the process of evacuating after officials sent out email and text alerts from the school's emergency notification system. Many were seen walking down SH 249. The sound made famous by artists like Bill Monroe and Ricky Skaggs will fill the air of Tomball Oct. 27, as the city hosts its first ever Tomball Bluegrass Festival at the Tomball Depot. The event, which will feature four bands, has been drawing a lot of interest, according to Tomball Marketing Director Mike Baxter. Man arrested in hit and run accident

Tomball police have arrested a man suspected in an early morning hit and run which seriously injured a pedestrian Oct. 8. Detectives obtained a warrant for Juan Carlos Romero, 32, of Tomball after evidence led them to a vehicle owned by the man. He was charged with a felony of Failure to Stop and Render Aid. The events started when a Tomball police officer found Earl Moore, 55, lying in a ditch on James Street. The officer determined that Moore had been hit by a car. The Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) has received a federal grant to purchase top of the line smoke detectors for area residents. The department will receive more than $70,000 from the federal government to purchase the detectors, through a FEMA fire prevention safety grant. The grant, which is funded 75 percent by FEMA and 25 percent by the MVFD, means that the total amount will add up to more than $88,000. Service groups expand to reach more citizens

The Society of Samaritan (SOS) of Magnolia has a 25-year history of helping needy residents within the Magnolia area by supplying food, emergency financial needs, clothing and household items. Lynette Gibbons, who previously headed the special projects ministry of S.O.S., is now heading up a sister organization, Intercept Ministries. The new non-profit organization will support family events, such as back-to-school clothing and supply drives, Christmas toys and Easter baskets.
