Bomb threat received at Tomball college

A bomb threat was phoned in early this afternoon, officials at Lone Star College-Tomball confirmed. Officials said they received the anonymous threat by phone at around 1:30 p.m. Tomball Police, the Harris County Sheriff's office, federal authorities and campus police were all on scene. Students began the process of evacuating after officials sent out email and text alerts from the school's emergency notification system. Many were seen walking down SH 249. The sound made famous by artists like Bill Monroe and Ricky Skaggs will fill the air of Tomball Oct. 27, as the city hosts its first ever Tomball Bluegrass Festival at the Tomball Depot. The event, which will feature four bands, has been drawing a lot of interest, according to Tomball Marketing Director Mike Baxter. Man arrested in hit and run accident

Tomball police have arrested a man suspected in an early morning hit and run which seriously injured a pedestrian Oct. 8. Detectives obtained a warrant for Juan Carlos Romero, 32, of Tomball after evidence led them to a vehicle owned by the man. He was charged with a felony of Failure to Stop and Render Aid. The events started when a Tomball police officer found Earl Moore, 55, lying in a ditch on James Street. The officer determined that Moore had been hit by a car. The Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) has received a federal grant to purchase top of the line smoke detectors for area residents. The department will receive more than $70,000 from the federal government to purchase the detectors, through a FEMA fire prevention safety grant. The grant, which is funded 75 percent by FEMA and 25 percent by the MVFD, means that the total amount will add up to more than $88,000. "Since it is a share grant we have to kick in 25 percent, which will be a little less than $18,000," said MVFD assistant chief Rusty Griffith. The grant…

Service groups expand to reach more citizens

The Society of Samaritan (SOS) of Magnolia has a 25-year history of helping needy residents within the Magnolia area by supplying food, emergency financial needs, clothing and household items. Lynette Gibbons, who previously headed the special projects ministry of S.O.S., is now heading up a sister organization, Intercept Ministries. The new non-profit organization will support family events, such as back-to-school clothing and supply drives, Christmas toys and Easter baskets. Also, Intercept Ministries will expand giving programs to include residents in the tri-county area where Waller, Grimes and Montgomery counties meet. Tomball Police searching for hit and run suspect

Tomball Police Department personnel are investigating a tragic hit and run traffic collision that resulted in a pedestrian being transported, via Life Flight, to Memorial Herman Hospital where he remains in critical condition. Renaissance Festival helps build Magnolia economy

It’s time again for the annual Texas Renaissance Festival, a fall tradition for many local families and several that are not local as well. Some Magnolia residents have enjoyed going to the festival for years. Mike Reynolds, Boy Scout leader for Troop 1488 in Magnolia, started coming when he was a teenager and now brings his own sons to the festival. “This event is good family entertainment, so we like to make a day of it,” said Reynolds. “I like the theater acts and musical groups. Man accused of Tomball rape now in jail

UPDATE: Munoz-Verudes is now in custody, following his arrest last Saturday, according to detectives. He was due in court today. ORIGINAL STORY: Tomball police are searching for a man they say lured a 17-year-old girl to his home with promises of a spiritual blessing and proceeded to rape her. Mario Munoz-Verudes, 60, has been charged with sexual assault. Police say he claims to perform “black magic.” Police said that according to documents found in his home, the man is an illegal immigrant, according to a citation from the Immigration and Naturalization Service. A Tomball woman was convicted of Intoxication Manslaughter by a Montgomery County jury, in a rare case involving legal prescription drugs. Sherri Lorene Holloway, 31, was sentenced to 12 years in state prison following her conviction. The case stemmed from a crash on SH 105 in February of 2011, where Holloway crossed the center line, hitting a white Chevrolet van, killing its driver, Kenneth Buffington. Prosecutors said he was killed almost instantly, due to the force of the crash. Holloway was seriously injured in the crash and sent by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital.
