Stocks zig-zag on signs of slow economic growth

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are bouncing between small gains and losses on Wall Street following more signs that the U.S. economic recovery is advancing, albeit at a slow pace. The Dow Jones industrial average was down two points at 13,170 just after noon on Wednesday. The broader S&P 500 index rose two points to 1,406, while the Nasdaq composite rose 12 points to 3,029. U.S. industrial production increased last month as factories made more cars, computers and airplanes, according to the Federal Reserve. Gunman shoots guard at conservative group's headquarters

WASHINGTON (AP) — A security guard for a conservative Christian lobbying group has been shot in the arm in the nation's capital. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says a man walked into the Family Research Council in the city's Chinatown neighborhood about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday and was confronted by a security guard, whom he shot. The guard and others wrestled the man to the ground and he was taken into custody by the FBI. Bahrain court jails man over Muhammad wife insult

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — Bahrain's attorney general says a 19-year-old man has been sentenced to two-years in jail for defaming one of the Prophet Muhammad's wives. Stocks fall as economic malaise spreads to Japan

U.S. stocks fell Monday as evidence piled up that the global economic slowdown is dragging on Asia. Japan's economy grew in the second quarter at a 1.4 percent annual rate, slower than many analysts had expected. Last week, China released dismal figures on retail sales and exports in July. 110-year-old Pa. widow gets WWI benefits boost

Family members say Alda Collins is now getting about $1,000 a month to assist with her stay at a nursing home near Ebensburg. She had been getting $36 a month.
