| Driver gets five manslaughter charges for January wreck |
|
More than five months after a fiery car crash that ended five lives, Brandon Lee Ferguson, 22, of Magnolia, was officially charged June 22 with five counts of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault, authorities said.
Authorities have said 22-year-old Brandon Lee Ferguson was driving the car that caused the crash and was traveling at “an extremely high rate of speed” when the accident occurred. Racing may have been a factor in the wreck, police have said. On Jan. 10, authorities said Ferguson was traveling down SH 249 in Pinehurst when he collided with a van attempting to cross the highway. Four people in the other car, Curtis Edwards, 78, Lloyd Edwards, 83, Catherine Edwards, 83, Karla Sexton, 59, and Donald Sexton, 60, were killed in the wreck, which occurred at the intersection of Partridge Circle. The crash also killed Ferguson’s girlfriend, Kayla Pratorius, 18, who was a passenger in his car. Ferguson was given 24 hours to turn himself in and he “almost made that deadline” said Warren Diepraam of the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office, posting a $180,000 bond. Diepraam said that every case is different but this particular case is “unique” because of the investigation that the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is currently undertaking in Austin. The DA’s office is still waiting on the report. A court date has not yet been set, pending the grand jury investigation into the case, but Diepraam said he is expecting there to be a date set next week.
