Harris County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the kidnapping of his 19-year-old girlfriend and the attempted assault of a Sheriff’s Deputy.
The incident started June 28 around 9 p.m. when the suspect, Kevin Pope, showed up to visit his girlfriend and their 16-month-old baby at her parent’s home near Hufsmith-Kohrville Road and Spring Cypress. While the couple was talking outside the residence, deputies state Pope grabbed his girlfriend around the throat, threw her into his pick-up and took off.
According to the victim, they drove around the area for a while at speeds of 100 miles per hour while she begged him to let her go. During this time, the victim says he threatened to kill her but she was able to call her parents on her cell phone so they could hear she was in trouble. The victim named streets while in the truck, hoping her parents could get help.
The victim’s father was able to locate his daughter in his pick-up and he signaled to his daughter as he drove alongside the suspect’s vehicle. The victim jumped out of the suspect vehicle at a red light and ran to her father’s truck.
The suspect then began chasing the father and appeared to have him cornered in a cul-de-sac off of Spring-Cypress and SH 249. Pope then attempted to again take his girlfriend by leaving his vehicle and climbing into the back bed of the father’s pick-up and breaking out the rear sliding window of the truck cab.
The victim’s father performed a series of quick starts and stops, throwing Pope out of the pick-up. The victim’s father then drove to a shopping center parking lot atSH 249 and Spring–Cypress where he called police.
While deputies and EMS were talking to the father and victim, Deputy J.C. Thomas attempted to stop a pick-up matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle on Hufsmith-Kohrville Road, just south of Spring-Cypress. The vehicle attempted to ram Thomas’ car during the traffic stop.
The suspect’s vehicle then crashed in the 22500 block of Tomball Parkway, and the suspect fled on foot toward where his girlfriend and father were talking to police. A Cypress Creek paramedic spotted the suspect walking along a fence near where the victim was being treated and alerted police. A Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit responded and Pope was taken into custody. Pope is currently in the Harris County Jail under a No-Bond for a charge of Kidnapping, a $15,000 dollar bond for Evading Arrest with a Motor Vehicle, and a $30,000 bond for Aggravated Assault of a Public Servant.
