Local tragedy heightens community awareness

Last week we were all saddened by the news that a Spring woman, 27-year-old Sabrina Pina was found dead in a ditch in northwest Harris County, less than 24 hours after she spent a few hours shopping at the Kohl’s on SH 249 south of Tomball.

Police reported that she had been abducted in broad daylight at her truck in the parking lot of the shopping center, and was later shot and killed. A suspect, 27-year-old Theodore Schmidt was arrested last week and charged with first-degree felony murder in Pina’s death.

Apparently, the two knew each other in high school, but Schmidt claims they had no contact since just after their graduation.

Investigators say Pina’s hands and eyes had been taped and that prints lifted from the tape belonged to Schmidt.

It’s way too early to know what exactly happened in the Kohl’s parking lot the day Pina went missing.

This sad tragedy is a sharp reminder that no one is safe, even while doing something as innocent as shopping at a busy clothing store in the middle of the day. By all accounts, Pina took precautions and was someone who was aware of her surroundings.

Perhaps that is what is so frightening about her death. She apparently had done most everything right.

Her death sent shockwaves throughout the local community. Last week, the Tomball Academy reported significant increases in its sales of pepper spray. Hundreds commented online, giving tips about how to stay safe while sending condolences to her family.

Pina’s death is a tragedy that reminds you of how fragile life is, and how quickly it can end. If there is anything to be taken from her death, it certainly could be a heightened sense awareness, particularly for women.

In the weeks following a story such as this, it’s not uncommon for people to be more on guard. But as the story fades from our memories, so too does our alertness. We need to remain vigilant and aware at all times.

In particular, women need to take extra precautions to remain safe. The website safetyforwomen.com offers several great tips. A few of them include:

- If you see or sense problems on your way, just change your route and prepare to run or defend yourself.
- Do not act or look like an easy target – look confident.
- Danger areas are stepping out of your car either at home or in isolated areas, and also walking to your car.
- Always approach your vehicle with keys ready.
- Always check your car before entering.
- Never leave your car unlocked, even for the few minutes it may take you to return a video, buy milk and such.
- Always be alert in parking lots, especially when it’s dark. If you are afraid, don’t be too shy to ask someone to escort you to your car.

These tips, of course, will not guarantee someone’s safety, but they’re a good start. Be sure to check out more tips on the above-mentioned website, and do more research of your own online. The more you know, the better off you’ll be.

Remember to stay safe at all times. And most importantly, if you see something suspicious, call the police.
