Former Cougar Hayes ascending through minor leagues

It's no secret the Tomball Cougars have churned out top-notch collegiate and professional baseball prospects such as Cody Podraza (Texas Rangers), Troy Patton (Baltimore Orioles), and Daniel Rumsey (Kansas State) for years. Tyree Hayes is another name on the long list of Tomball alumni making a name for themselves in the professional circuits. Hayes was born August 8, 1988 in Mesa, Ariz. The son of 13-year Major League Baseball third baseman Charlie Hayes, who some might remember  as the player who made the athletic catch to clinch the 1996 World Series for the New York Yankees, Tyree’s bloodlines certainly suggest an aptitude for the sport. However, it’s the pitchers’ talent and delivery from the mound that has raised eyebrows.

Hayes was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the eighth round of the 2006 draft out of Tomball High School as a pitcher and outfielder. He then played on several minor league teams including the Princeton Devil Rays and the Hudson Valley Renegades where he held a .523 winning percentage with an ERA of 2.78 before moving to his current team, the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

Though his stats aren't eye pooping, whenever given the chance to produce as a starter, Hayes has the ability to put up some good numbers. The 6-foot, 1-inch 175 pounder’s repertoire includes a two seamed and four-seamed fastball, a curveball and a changeup. Though his fastball is clocked in the mid to high 80s, scouts believe as he fills out his frame and gets stronger, he’ll be throwing in the mid 90s.

In any case, Hayes is at .500 in 16 games as a Hot Rod as of press time. The Hot Rods play in the South Atlantic Division of the class A Minor Leagues and are two games under .500 as of press time.
