After going 20-7 overall and 13-1 in district, which was more than enough to earn them the 18-4A crown, the Magnolia Bulldogs baseball team was well rewarded with postseason honors.

The Bulldogs placed nine players on the first and second team All-District squads, while also receiving the highest postseason recognitions.

Junior Darek Barosh and Brenham’s Erich Weiss were named co-MVP’s of 18-4A. Barosh was the main offensive threat for the Bulldogs this year, hitting .382 with three home runs and 24 RBI. Barosh also went 5-2 on the mound with a 3.13 ERA.

Head coach Dale Westmoreland was named Coach of the Year by his peers for leading the Bulldogs to the district title.

Others receiving First Team recognition for the Bulldogs were senior pitchers Garrett Kinart and Ryan Welch. Kinart went 5-2 with a 1.21 ERA in 2009, while Welch led the team with 8-1 record, a 1.23 ERA and 68.3 innings pitched.

Infielder Rodney Garza and outfielder Kenny Freelow also were named to the first team. Garza hit a stellar .361 with 21 RBI. Freelow was just as impressive, hitting .313 with 11 RBI.

Junior infielder Brett Thornell, senior catcher Jake Downey and senior outfielder Rene Moreda were all named to the second team.

The Bulldogs’ nine selections were more than any other team.

The Magnolia West Mustangs, after going just 2-12 in the first varsity season, saw infielder Casey Martinez named to the second team.

Waller’s Robert Loewe was named First Team All-District, while freshman Eric Huffman made second team as an outfielder.
