LSC-Tomball fielding growing athletic programs

Lone Star College-Tomball is now making a name for itself in the realm of athletics. The Timberwolves compete in several club and intramural sports such as men and women’s basketball, and soccer. The Tomball campus also offers volleyball, baseball, and flag football.

Due to a large turnout, and the many talented athletes from different high schools in the area, club teams at LSC-Tomball are very competitive and participation is on a tryout basis. The Timberwolves compete in the Lonestar College system conference, which includes LSC-Tomball, Montgomery, Kingwood, Cy-Fair and North Harris.

The teams have seen success, especially in volleyball. To date the Timberwolf women’s volleyball team has won three conference championships and another in an out-of-conference league.

Because of their recent success the Lady Timberwolves are joining the SIVA league. SIVA is a year-round club league that competes on weekends.

Men’s basketball is also spreading its wings. The men have a league championship under their belts and also schedule 12 to 16 games against several other Texas schools, including Blinn Junior College, Midland Junior College, San Jacinto Community College, Sam Houston State, TSU, and University of Houston-Downtown.

LSC-Tomball also offers intramural sports for those who do not wish to compete at the club level or don’t make a team. Any school with an adequate number of students interested can start an athletic intramural team.

For instance, LSC-Tomball offers flag football, racquetball, running, cycling, and even video game clubs for Nintendo Wii Tennis or Madden NFL Football. All that is required for a student to start a club is a good following, an advisor or sponsor, and a small amount of paperwork.

Though the intramural clubs are not in an athletic conference, they are welcome to compete against students at LSC-Tomball and other campuses in the Lone Star system.

LSC-Tomball also features a wellness center open to all students. Non students have the option to pay $50 for a four month membership or $5 for a one day pass. The Wellness Center includes a weight room, a cardio equipment room with televisions, a rock climbing wall, racquetball courts and men and women’s locker rooms.

“I don’t think the district is looking to join an NJCAA conference right now, but it’s a definite possibility,”LSC-Tomball Athletics and Wellness Advisor Paul Dempsey said.

Considering the strides the athletics program at LSC-Tomball is taking, an NJCAA conference membership definitely wouldn’t be a far cry from the Timberwolves athletics current set up.
